Almost every lion's mane label leads with a beta-glucan percentage, and for lion's mane that's close to the least useful number on the panel. Neither of the two human trials people cite for cognition measured beta-glucan at all. One used plain dried fruiting body. The other standardised on a compound — erinacine A — that fruiting bodies don't contain.
Read a lion's mane label in this order: material type first, then dose in grams, then any named compound standardisation, and only then beta-glucan. Mori's 2009 cognition trial used 3 grams a day of dried fruiting body powder. The 2020 Alzheimer's pilot used three 350 mg mycelium capsules standardised to 5 mg/g erinacine A. Beta-glucan appears in neither protocol. It's a useful immune metric borrowed from Reishi marketing, and it doesn't predict a cognitive effect.
This isn't an argument that beta-glucan is meaningless. It's an argument that it answers a question most lion's mane buyers aren't asking. Here's what to read instead.
Why Is Beta-Glucan the Wrong Headline Number for Lion's Mane?
Because the compounds behind lion's mane's reputation aren't glucans. They're two small-molecule families: hericenones, found in the fruiting body, and erinacines, found in the mycelium. Both are studied for nerve growth factor stimulation. Neither is a polysaccharide.
Beta-glucan became the industry's headline number for good reasons that belong to other species. For Reishi and Trametes, the polysaccharide fraction is the studied active, so the percentage tracks something real. Lion's mane inherited the metric because it's sold on the same shelf.
Commercial analyses put lion's mane fruiting body at roughly 3% beta-glucan — low next to Trametes at 45% or more. That's not a quality problem. It's a sign you're measuring the wrong thing.
What Does "Fruiting Body" Actually Buy You?
Hericenones, and the only trial that used an ordinary supermarket-style preparation. Mori's 2009 study gave 30 adults with mild cognitive impairment 3 grams a day of dried lion's mane fruiting body powder in tablet form for 16 weeks, with cognitive scores improving during treatment and falling back after it stopped (Mori et al., Phytother Res, 2009).
What matters for label reading: that trial used unstandardised powder. No extraction ratio, no compound percentage, no beta-glucan figure. Just 3 grams of the dried mushroom. If a product tells you its fruiting body content in grams, you can compare it directly against that protocol — which is more than you can do with most standardised extracts.
What Does Mycelium Buy You?
Erinacines, which fruiting bodies don't produce in meaningful amounts. This is where the usual "fruiting body good, mycelium bad" rule breaks down for this one species.
The 2020 pilot in early Alzheimer's disease used erinacine A-enriched Hericium erinaceus mycelia: three 350 mg capsules daily, standardised to 5 mg/g erinacine A, over 49 weeks. Mini-Mental State Examination scores improved in the treatment group while the placebo group's cognitive screening scores declined (Li et al., Front Aging Neurosci, 2020).

How Do You Spot Mycelium Grown on Grain?
Look for the word myceliated, or a phrase like "cultivated on organic oats" or "whole biomass". All three mean the grain substrate is in the capsule with the fungus, because separating them is difficult and expensive.
The tell is a high polysaccharide figure with no beta-glucan figure. Starch is a polysaccharide. Grain is mostly starch. A product declaring "50% polysaccharides" and nothing else is quite possibly telling you it's half oats, in a way that reads as potency.
This isn't automatically a bad product. Erinacine A comes from mycelium, so a myceliated product standardised to erinacine A is doing something specific and defensible. A myceliated product standardised to nothing is selling you cultured grain.
Can You Reach a Trial Dose From the Label?
This is the test most products quietly fail. Take the daily serving in grams and set it against 3 grams of fruiting body powder or roughly 1 gram of erinacine A-standardised mycelium. Many products land far below both and never mention it.
Our own lion's mane capsules hold 0.5 g of fruiting body each, so six capsules is exactly the 3 grams Mori used. The recommended 3–4 capsules is 1.5–2 grams — a maintenance dose, not the trial dose, and worth saying plainly. Reaching the studied amount means taking more, and the label lets you work that out. Plenty don't.
What Does a Good Label Look Like?
Specific, in units you can multiply. A label worth trusting reads something like: Hericium erinaceus fruiting body, 500 mg per capsule, 3–6 capsules daily, third-party tested for heavy metals. Four facts, no adjectives, and enough to compare against a published protocol.
A label to walk away from reads: "Lion's Mane Extract Complex, 1,000 mg proprietary blend, 30% polysaccharides." Every element there resists checking. A proprietary blend hides the split between ingredients. A milligram figure attached to a blend doesn't tell you how much lion's mane is in it. And the polysaccharide percentage may be measuring the substrate.
Heavy metal testing deserves its own line. Mushrooms take up what their growing medium contains, cadmium and lead included, so a certificate of analysis matters more here than it does for most plant supplements.
A Two-Minute Label Audit
- Find the material type. Fruiting body, mycelium, or unstated — unstated is a fail.
- Find the daily dose in grams or milligrams of actual mushroom, not capsule weight.
- Look for a named compound. Erinacine A is the only lion's mane standardisation with a trial behind it.
- If polysaccharides are listed without beta-glucans, discount the number entirely.
- Check for third-party testing on heavy metals. Mushrooms accumulate what their substrate holds.
- Compare your answer to step 2 against 3 grams a day. Then decide whether the price still makes sense.
