Spirulina Dosage and Quality Guide: How Much, and What to Check

Published spirulina trials run from 1 to 8 grams a day, and almost every label sits inside that range — so dosing spirulina is unusually easy. The harder question is what's in the powder. The WHO tolerable daily intake for microcystin-LR works out to about 2.4 micrograms for a 60 kg adult, and a 3 gram serving sitting exactly at the legal contamination ceiling would deliver 3 micrograms. The dose isn't the risk. The batch is.

Most spirulina research uses 1–8 grams daily, with 2–4 grams covering the majority of trials: 2 g/day for six months in the allergic rhinitis study, 1–8 g/day for 2–12 weeks in the blood-pressure trials, and 1–4.5 g/day in most lipid studies. A lipid meta-analysis found the effect did not scale with dose, so more is not better. Quality matters far more than dose: check for a batch-level microcystin result, a declared species (Arthrospira platensis), and deep blue-green colour rather than olive-brown.

Spirulina is one of the few supplements where the dosing question is close to settled and the sourcing question isn't. That's the reverse of the usual situation, and it changes what a buyer should actually spend time on.

The full published range is 1 to 8 grams daily, with most positive trials clustered between 1 and 4.5 grams. A 2021 meta-analysis in Nutrients pooling five randomized controlled trials in 230 subjects covered exactly that 1–8 gram span over durations of 2 to 12 weeks, and found meaningful blood-pressure effects across it without a clear dose gradient.

That last detail is the useful one. A 2016 meta-analysis in Clinical Nutrition examining spirulina's effect on plasma lipids reported that the changes were independent of the administered dose — higher intakes did not produce proportionally larger reductions. Taking 10 grams instead of 3 mostly means buying through your supply three times faster.

A practical default of 3 grams daily — roughly one level teaspoon of powder — sits comfortably inside every one of those ranges. Going higher has no clear support; going below 1 gram takes you under the lowest dose anyone has studied.

Does the Dose Change by Goal?

Only slightly, and less than most dosage guides imply. The 2023 systematic review in Pharmacological Research pooled 20 studies across 23 treatment arms and 1,076 participants and found significant improvements in LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol, and triglycerides, with a standardized mean difference of −0.6 for each — a moderate effect achieved across a wide spread of doses.

Duration turns out to matter more than milligrams. The allergic rhinitis trial ran a full six months at a modest 2 grams daily. The blood-pressure trials ran as short as two weeks. If you're targeting lipids, plan on at least 8 to 12 weeks before drawing any conclusion, and get a baseline blood panel first — otherwise there's nothing to compare against. Powder has a second advantage that matters more than convenience. You can see it. Colour is the only quality signal available without a laboratory, and a capsule shell hides exactly the thing worth inspecting.

When Should You Take It?

There's no timing effect in the trial literature — no study has compared morning against evening dosing — so the practical answer comes from absorption and tolerance rather than research. Take it with food if it upsets your stomach, which is the most commonly reported minor complaint, and start at 1 gram for the first week before working up.

Two interactions are worth planning around. Spirulina's iron is non-heme, so tea, coffee, and calcium taken at the same time suppress absorption, while vitamin C improves it — a reason to pair it with citrus rather than with breakfast coffee. And if you notice headaches or loose stools in the first few days, that's a tolerance issue to be managed by lowering the dose, not a "detox reaction," a claim with no supporting evidence behind it.

The Contamination Number That Actually Matters

Here's where the real risk lives, and the arithmetic is unforgiving. The WHO tolerable daily intake for microcystin-LR is 0.04 micrograms per kilogram of body weight per day, which for a 60 kg adult is about 2.4 micrograms. Oregon set a regulatory ceiling of 1 microgram of microcystin per gram of blue-green algae product in 1997, and it remains the reference standard the industry cites. A 3 gram serving at exactly that ceiling delivers 3 micrograms — already over the adult daily intake, and roughly five times a 16 kg child's.

So does that mean spirulina is dangerous? No — and this is where most content on the subject gets it wrong. The alarming contamination data comes from a different organism. When the Oregon Health Division tested products under its new standard, it found microcystins in 85 of 87 samples, with 72% exceeding 1 microgram per gram, but those were Aphanizomenon flos-aquae products harvested from a lake experiencing a Microcystis bloom. A separate 2012 analysis of 13 algal supplements in Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology found microcystins only in the Aphanizomenon products; the spirulina and chlorella samples tested clean.

Arthrospira does not produce microcystins. It's grown in highly alkaline ponds precisely because few competing organisms tolerate that pH. The risk isn't inherent to the species — it's a pond-hygiene failure, a toxin-producing cyanobacterium drifting into an open cultivation system. That's a manufacturing variable, which is why a batch-specific test result is worth more than any certification logo on the front of the tub.

Are Heavy Metals a Real Spirulina Problem?

Less than the internet suggests, on the available evidence. A 2013 analysis in the Saudi Journal of Biological Sciences measured six metals across 25 spirulina products sold worldwide and found nickel, zinc, mercury, platinum, magnesium, and manganese all within safe daily intake levels — mercury ranged from 0.002 to 0.028 mg/kg dry weight, nickel from 0.211 to 4.672. Every sample was judged safe for consumption.

That's genuinely reassuring, with one gap worth naming: the study didn't measure lead, cadmium, or arsenic, the three metals most often raised as concerns. So the honest position is that the metals that have been surveyed in commercial spirulina came back clean, and the three most-discussed ones haven't been surveyed at the same scale. A full heavy-metal panel on the certificate of analysis closes that gap for a specific batch, which is the level any of this can actually be answered at.

What a Good Spirulina Label Should Show

Of the 6 data points that let you actually assess a batch, most spirulina labels carry 1: a serving size. Protein percentage is usually the only other figure, and it's the least informative one on the panel. Here's what a label worth trusting shows instead:

  • Species namedArthrospira platensis or maxima, not just "blue-green algae," a term that also covers Aphanizomenon.
  • Batch microcystin result, with the test method stated (ELISA or LC-MS/MS) and a figure, not a "tested for purity" claim.
  • Heavy-metal panel covering lead, cadmium, arsenic, and mercury on the certificate of analysis.
  • Phycocyanin content — rarely declared, and the single best marker of a well-grown, well-dried harvest.
  • Origin and cultivation method, open pond or closed photobioreactor.
  • Harvest or manufacture date, since phycocyanin degrades with time, heat, and light.

Failing that, colour does a surprising amount of work. Fresh, well-handled spirulina is a deep blue-green; olive, grey, or brown powder signals heat damage during drying, age, or a low-phycocyanin crop. The same scrutiny that reading a mushroom supplement label requires applies here, with the added advantage that algae shows its condition visually in a way extract powders don't. Store it sealed, dry, and away from light.

Dose Limits and Who Should Avoid It

Three groups should not simply scale the standard dose down. People with phenylketonuria should avoid spirulina entirely — at roughly 2.78 grams of phenylalanine per 100 grams, a 3 gram serving carries about 83 mg, which is significant against a controlled budget. Anyone with an autoimmune condition or taking immunosuppressants needs medical advice first, because spirulina's mechanism in the rhinitis trial was immune activation.

Children are the group where the microcystin arithmetic bites hardest, since the tolerable intake scales with body weight: a 16 kg child's is roughly 0.64 micrograms daily, a quarter of an adult's. Combined with the absence of paediatric dosing trials, that argues for not giving spirulina to children without a tested batch and medical guidance. Pregnancy and breastfeeding safety data is insufficient, so the conservative position applies.
