Lion's mane is a mushroom of longevity: properties and benefits

Lion's mane (Hericium erinaceus) has recently been actively studied in clinical research due to its neuroprotective and cognitive properties.

A study showed that Erinacin A from Hericium erinaceus was able to extend the life of Drosophila and mice, increasing their lifespan by 14-319% for flies and 14-23% for mice. This mushroom component has shown promise for extending longevity.

Lion's mane is also valued not only for its antiaging properties. L-ergothioneine (EGT), a thiol derivative of histidine contained in Hericium erinaceus, has been shown to improve motor activity in mice during aging and to affect markers of oxidative stress pathways. This discovery is of great importance

Regarding cognitive properties, a study in aged mice showed that Hericium erinaceus extract reduced the cognitive frailty index, which may indicate its potential in improving cognitive function and fighting neurodegenerative diseases such as dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Scientists found that Hericium erinaceus extract stimulates the recovery and development of new neurons in the brain, especially in the cerebellum and hippocampus, which are important for coordination and memory. The appearance of PCNA and DCX labels in the cells of these areas indicates an active process of recovery and growth of new brain cells.

Although the experiments were conducted on mice, they are very similar to humans in many ways. Their brains work according to the same basic rules as ours, and drugs or other substances often affect them in the same way as we do.
