A 2019 trial tested 500 mg per day of purified shilajit extract over eight weeks and found it reduced the fatigue-induced decline in maximal voluntary isometric contraction, alongside lower serum hydroxyproline — a marker associated with connective tissue breakdown (Keller et al., J Int Soc Sports Nutr, 2019).

The practical reading is narrow but real: shilajit appeared to help maintain strength under fatigue rather than to increase peak strength. That's a recovery-and-resilience effect, not a pre-workout stimulant effect.

Raw shilajit scraped from rock is not a finished product. Because it forms in mineral-rich geology, it can carry lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium, along with soil, sand, moulds, mycotoxins, and microbes.

Proper processing — filtration, controlled drying, and testing — removes contaminants while retaining the fulvic acid and DBP fractions. Unprocessed material is not the more authentic option; it's the unfinished one.

Shilajit marketing runs well ahead of its research, and naming the gap is more useful than another summary of the positive findings. The trials that exist are small, mostly single-centre, several are industry-funded, and few have been independently replicated. That's a thin foundation for the range of claims attached to it.

Specifically, there's no good human evidence that shilajit reverses ageing, detoxifies anything, treats altitude sickness, improves fertility outcomes, raises immunity in any measurable way, or acts as a mineral supplement worth counting toward daily intake. The trace mineral claim in particular deserves scepticism: the amounts present are small, variable between sources, and not standardised, so treating shilajit as a mineral source rather than a plant-derived compound with a few studied effects gets the pharmacology backwards.

Fulvic acid is a family of compounds rather than a single defined molecule, its content varies substantially between shilajit sources, and most of the mechanistic claims made for it come from laboratory and agricultural research rather than human trials.

Shilajit has a small but real body of human evidence behind a narrow set of outcomes, and a much larger body of marketing behind everything else. Purification isn't optional — unprocessed material carries genuine heavy metal and mycotoxin risk — so a published certificate of analysis is the first thing to look for and the only claim on the packaging that can be verified.
