Shilajit's contamination risk is real but usually argued with the wrong numbers. The alarming mercury figures circulating online come from rasa shastra preparations, which contain metals deliberately — shilajit isn't one of them. The genuine problems are subtler: a supplement sitting exactly at the EU lead limit delivers 3.6 times California's daily warning threshold at a trial dose, and thallium, the metal one 2025 analysis found most concentrated in finished supplements, isn't regulated in food at all.
This is the article we'd want someone to read before buying shilajit from anyone, us included. Our dosage guide works out how much to take; this one works out what else comes with it. The honest summary is that the category has a real quality problem, that most of the scary content written about it cites the wrong studies, and that the checks which would actually protect you are not the ones brands advertise.
Is the Shilajit Heavy Metal Scare Real?
Partly. Shilajit is mineral pitch that seeps from rock, so it carries whatever the rock and the decomposed plant matter carried — there is no version of this substance that contains no metals at all. The question was never whether metals are present but whether the amount matters at the dose you take.
What muddies this is that almost every warning article about shilajit reaches for the same source: a body of research on Ayurvedic medicine contamination in which shilajit barely appears. Getting that distinction right changes what you should actually worry about.
What the Ayurveda Studies Actually Found
The landmark paper is Saper's 2008 analysis in JAMA, which bought 230 Ayurvedic medicines online, analysed 193 of them, and found 20.7% contained detectable lead, mercury or arsenic (PMID 18728265). Every single metal-containing product exceeded at least one acceptable-daily-intake standard. That's a damning result and it's quoted constantly.
What gets left out is the split inside it. The products were divided into rasa shastra formulations — a traditional branch that deliberately incorporates purified metals and minerals as active ingredients — and everything else. Rasa shastra products were contaminated at 40.6% versus 17.1% for the rest. The median mercury concentration in rasa shastra medicines was 20,800 µg/g against 34.5 µg/g in non-rasa shastra products. That's a six-hundred-fold gap, and it isn't contamination in the rasa shastra arm. It's the recipe.
Shilajit is not a rasa shastra preparation. Quoting that 20,800 figure in an article about shilajit is like warning people about spinach by citing lead paint. The number that actually applies to a substance like shilajit is the non-rasa shastra one: roughly one in six products carrying detectable metals, median lead 7.0 µg/g. Still a real problem. A completely different size of problem.
One finding from that paper does transfer intact, and it's the useful one: US-manufactured products were contaminated at 21.7% and Indian-manufactured ones at 19.5%, a difference of nothing at all. Where a product was packaged tells you nothing about what's in it.
The Metal Nobody Tests For
In 2025, Kamgar and colleagues measured thallium in raw shilajit and in commercial shilajit supplements, publishing in BMC Chemistry (PMID 39827344). Raw material ran up to 0.226 µg/g, varying by geological source. Finished supplements ran up to 0.5 µg/g, with individual capsules delivering as much as 0.095 µg of thallium each.
Read those two numbers in order. Some finished supplements contained more thallium per gram than the crude material they were made from. Whatever "purification" those products underwent concentrated the contaminant rather than removing it — which is the opposite of what the word promises on a label.
Is 0.095 µg per capsule dangerous? Probably not on its own. Two capsules a day is 0.19 µg, against a US drinking water limit of 2 µg per litre, meaning two litres of legally compliant tap water could deliver twenty times more. We'd rather say that plainly than manufacture alarm. The problem is structural, not acute: thallium accumulates, no food regulation anywhere sets a limit for it, no shilajit brand tests for it, and a substance taken daily for 90 days is exactly the exposure pattern where accumulation matters. The authors' own conclusion was that standardised testing is needed — not that anyone should panic.
Why "EU Compliant" Isn't the Same as "Low in Lead"
Here is the arithmetic that changed how we think about this. EU Regulation 2023/915 caps lead in food supplements at 3 mg/kg — that's 3 µg per gram. California's Proposition 65 requires a warning above 0.5 µg of lead per day. Both are legitimate limits written by serious people. They are also about 3,000 times apart in what they imply, because one governs concentration and the other governs daily intake.
Put a shilajit product exactly at the EU ceiling and work out what a day's worth delivers:

A product can be fully legal in Europe, accurately advertised as compliant, and still put you several times over the level at which California would require a warning label. Neither authority is lying. "Compliant" is simply a weaker claim than most buyers hear, and the gap widens the more you take — which is why this article and the dosage one belong together.
To be clear about direction: most products are nowhere near the ceiling. The point is that compliance alone doesn't tell you where in the range a product sits, and only a number does.
What Does "Purified" Actually Mean?
Legally, nothing. There is no regulatory definition of purified shilajit, no threshold a product must meet to use the word, and no requirement to say what was removed.
Traditionally it means shodhana, a process of dissolving raw pitch in water, filtering out sand and rock debris, and evaporating it back down. That reliably removes insoluble grit. It does not reliably remove dissolved metals, because lead and thallium go into the water with everything else you were trying to keep.
Standardisation is a third thing again, and worth separating clearly. The extract used in all three shilajit clinical trials, PrimaVie, is standardised to at least 50% fulvic acids and at least 10% dibenzo-α-pyrone chromoproteins. Those are potency specifications. They say what's in the product, not what isn't. A product can hit every standardisation target and still carry a metal load, and a product can be metal-free and contain very little of anything active. You need both numbers, and most labels give you neither.
How to Read a Shilajit Lab Report
Four checks, in order of how often they catch something.
Is it per serving or per kilogram? This is the one that matters most and the one most often obscured. A report saying "lead: 1.2 mg/kg" sounds tiny and tells you nothing until you multiply by your dose. At 600 mg daily that's 0.72 µg of lead a day. Do the multiplication yourself; brands rarely do it for you.
Which metals were tested? Lead, cadmium and mercury are the standard trio because they're what regulations name. Arsenic is often absent. Thallium is essentially never included. A four-metal panel is good; a three-metal panel is normal; a panel that omits arsenic on a geological product is a gap worth asking about.
Was it ICP-MS? Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry detects at parts per billion, which is the resolution this question needs. Older or cheaper methods can return a clean "not detected" that only means "not detected by this method".
Which batch, and when? Shilajit's metal content depends on the rock it came from, so a certificate for one batch says little about the next. And the panel is the standard three metals: no arsenic, no thallium. Neither of those is unusual for the industry, and neither is a reason to feel good about it. Does Dose Change the Risk?
Directly and proportionally, which is the part that connects this article to the dosage one. Contamination is expressed as a concentration, so your exposure is concentration multiplied by intake. Doubling from one capsule to two to reach the dose the trials used also doubles whatever came along with it.
That's an argument for choosing a tested product, not for under-dosing an untested one. Taking half a trial dose of a contaminated product gives you half the metals and none of the benefit, which is the worst square on the board. Either buy something with a batch report and take the amount the research used, or don't take it.
Who Should Be Most Careful
Pregnancy is the clearest case, and it's the specific reason California's threshold sits at 0.5 µg: that number is a reproductive-toxicity limit, not a general one. Lead crosses the placenta and there's no established safe level for a developing nervous system. Children, for the same reason, plus lower body weight.
Anyone with iron-overload conditions such as haemochromatosis should be cautious for a separate reason — shilajit carries iron, and none of the trials enrolled people who need to restrict it. And anyone with impaired kidney function should be careful with any daily metal exposure, since the kidneys handle clearance. Pandit's trial screened out anyone whose urea, creatinine, ALT or AST fell outside the normal range before enrolling them, so its clean safety record simply doesn't extend to people who wouldn't have qualified.

Always, in some amount — it's a geological material and carries traces of whatever its source rock held. The relevant question is quantity per daily dose, not presence. Should I worry about thallium in shilajit?
Worry is the wrong word; two capsules at the worst measured level deliver about 0.19 µg, far below what two litres of legally compliant tap water may contain. The structural issue is that thallium accumulates, no food regulation limits it, and nobody tests for it — so nobody can tell you what their product contains.
