For every other mushroom, choosing a format is a question about potency and convenience. For chaga it's also a question about how much oxalate you swallow — and the three formats differ enormously on that. A decoction pulls out a fraction of the material. Ground powder delivers all of it. That single difference matters more than any extraction-ratio claim on a label.
Chunks are the traditional and lowest-exposure option, but they need a long simmer and can't match a dual extract on triterpene content. Raw ground powder is the cheapest and delivers the highest oxalate load, since you're swallowing the whole material. Dual extracts and tinctures capture both the water-soluble polysaccharides and the alcohol-soluble betulin fraction, at a higher price per serving. Given three published cases of chaga kidney injury, exposure is a legitimate tiebreaker.
Most chaga format guides compare potency and stop. That leaves out the variable that has actually put people on dialysis, so this one starts there.
What's in Chaga, and What Dissolves in What?
Two fractions, needing two solvents — the same structural problem Reishi has. The water-soluble side is polysaccharides and beta-glucans, extracted by prolonged hot water. The alcohol-soluble side is the triterpene fraction, including betulin and betulinic acid that chaga takes up from its birch host. Those are poorly water-soluble, so a tea leaves most of them behind.
That's the honest case for a dual extract, and it's a real one. It's the same chemistry we describe in our Reishi format guide, and unlike cordyceps — where the actives are water-soluble and dual extraction adds little — chaga genuinely has something an alcohol step recovers.
Why Is Format a Safety Decision Here?
Because chaga is exceptionally high in oxalate, and how much reaches you depends on what you do with the material. When researchers measured commercial chaga powders, one contained 14.2 grams of oxalate per 100 grams, with two other brands at 11.2 g and 2.8 g (Lee et al., J Korean Med Sci, 2020).
Now follow the material. Swallow ground chaga and you get all of that oxalate. Simmer chunks and drink the liquid, and much of it stays in the spent chunks you throw away. Nobody has quantified the difference, which is a genuine gap — but the direction isn't in doubt.

What Do Chunks Actually Require?
Time, and a bit of technique. Chaga is a hard, dense sclerotium; a five-minute steep does essentially nothing. A proper decoction means simmering below boiling for one to two hours, and the same chunks can be re-brewed several times until the liquid stops running dark.
That reusability is the part people miss when comparing prices. A batch of chunks yields multiple brews, so the cost per cup is far below the cost per gram. Our extraction methods article covers temperatures and timings properly.
What chunks can't do is deliver the betulin fraction. Water doesn't extract it, however long you simmer. If that fraction is why you're buying chaga, a decoction alone won't get you there — and pretending otherwise is where a lot of chaga marketing goes wrong.

Is Raw Powder Ever the Right Choice?
Rarely. It's the format with the highest exposure and the weakest extraction, because chaga's cell walls are chitin and grinding doesn't open them. You're swallowing a lot of material to release a modest fraction of what's in it.
The case for it is price and convenience — stirring a spoonful into coffee takes no time. The case against is that this is exactly the pattern in the case reports: a few grams a day, every day, for months. If you like the convenience, capsules of a proper extract give you the same ease with a defined and much smaller mass.
How Do You Judge an Extraction Ratio?
Sceptically. A "10:1 chaga extract" means ten kilograms of raw chaga produced one kilogram of extract, which tells you about mass and nothing about which compounds concentrated. Oxalate concentrates too, and no ratio label distinguishes the fractions.
What's worth looking for instead is a stated extraction method — hot water, alcohol, or both — and ideally a beta-glucan figure. Those describe what happened to the material. A ratio only describes how much of it disappeared.
Very few chaga products state either. That's a fair reason to prefer the format whose processing you control yourself, which is chunks in a pot on your own stove.
Does Storage Differ Between the Formats?
Yes, and chunks win again. Whole dried chaga is about as stable a material as exists in this category — it kept for years on a birch tree before anyone harvested it, and a sealed jar away from light will hold it indefinitely.
Ground powder oxidises faster because of its surface area, and it clumps if it picks up moisture. Tinctures are preserved by their alcohol and keep well. If you buy the kilogram of chunks, you're not racing a shelf life.
What Does Each Format Cost Per Day?
Chunks are dramatically cheaper. At €25 per 100 g, and given that chunks can be re-decocted, a daily cup costs well under €0.50. The 1 kg option at €59 makes that trivial — under €0.06 per gram.
Capsules at €39 for 120 work out to about €0.65 a day at two capsules, or €0.58 with the twin pack. That's the price of not having to simmer anything, and for chaga it also buys a fixed daily mass, which is a real advantage for a mushroom whose risk is cumulative.
Tinctures cost most per serving and deliver the fraction the other formats miss. Whether that's worth it depends on whether you want the triterpenes specifically.
Which Format Should You Choose?
- You want the traditional preparation and the lowest exposure: chunks, decocted, re-brewed until spent.
- You want convenience with a controlled daily amount: extract capsules.
- You specifically want the betulin fraction: a dual extract or tincture — water alone won't get it.
