Chaga Powder (Inonotus obliquus)

$29/100g

Chaga Powder is wild, birch-grown Inonotus obliquus that has been cleaned, dried at low temperature and milled to a fine, even powder. It is the same material as our Chaga chunks, taken one step further so that it brews in minutes rather than hours and can be measured by the gram.
It is the most flexible of our Chaga formats. You can simmer it into a dark, earthy tea, stir it into coffee or cocoa, or blend it into a smoothie — and because nothing has been extracted or removed, you get the whole mushroom rather than one fraction of it.

What Is in the Pack

One ingredient: milled Chaga sclerotium from wild birch trees. There is no mycelium grown on grain, no filler, no flow agent and no added flavouring.
That matters more with Chaga than with most mushrooms. What is sold as Chaga is not a mushroom cap but a sterile conk — a dense, charcoal-black mass that grows out of living birch over many years. Its compound profile depends heavily on that host tree: birch-grown Chaga takes up betulin and converts part of it to betulinic acid, which is why Chaga from other trees, or Chaga-like mycelium grown on grain in a factory, is not an equivalent product. Our article on birch, quality and sustainable harvesting explains the difference.
A good Chaga powder is a warm brown with darker flecks from the outer crust. Uniformly pale or grey-beige powder usually means too much of the woody birch tissue underneath was ground in with it.

What Chaga Contains

Chaga is studied mainly for three groups of compounds. The first is polysaccharides, including beta-glucans, which are water-soluble and have been the focus of most immune-related laboratory work. The second is triterpenes and sterols — betulin, betulinic acid, inotodiol and lanosterol — which are poorly soluble in water. The third is the dark melanin-polyphenol complex that gives Chaga its colour and its high antioxidant values in laboratory assays.
It is worth being clear about the evidence. Most Chaga research is in cell cultures and animals; human clinical data are limited. Our guide to Chaga and immune modulation summarises what has been studied and how far it goes. This powder is a traditional food ingredient, not a treatment for any condition.

Powder or Capsules?

We sell Chaga in four formats, and the powder sits in the middle of them.
Chunks are the cheapest per gram and the most traditional choice, but they need a long, slow simmer and can be reused several times. Powder brews in 10–15 minutes because the surface area is so much larger, and it can be eaten whole in food and drinks. Our capsules contain a 10:1 dual extract, 500 mg per capsule, with no taste. The tincture is a liquid extract measured by the drop.
The practical difference between the powder and the capsules is that the powder is the whole mushroom, while the capsules hold what hot water and alcohol pulled out of it, concentrated tenfold. The powder is cheaper per gram and keeps the fibre; the capsules are stronger per gram and need no preparation. Our comparison of Chaga powder, chunks and extract goes into the trade-offs in more detail.

How to Use Chaga Powder

As tea: simmer 1–2 g (about half a level teaspoon) per cup in water just below the boil for 10–15 minutes, then strain through a fine sieve or paper filter. Do not boil hard — a gentle simmer gives a smoother, less bitter cup.
In drinks and food: stir 1 g into coffee, cocoa, a latte or a smoothie. Chaga is mildly bitter with a vanilla-like, woody note that sits well with coffee and chocolate.
A typical daily amount is 1–3 g. Start at the lower end for the first week and keep to it consistently rather than taking large amounts occasionally. Our Chaga dosage guide covers amounts by format, and the Chaga extraction methods article explains why a simmer gets more out of the powder than a quick steep.

Storage and Shelf Life

Keep the pouch tightly resealed in a cool, dry, dark cupboard. Fine powders take up moisture from the air far faster than whole chunks, so do not store it next to the kettle or above the hob, and always use a dry spoon.
Stored this way it keeps its quality for 24 months. Light clumping can be broken up; a musty or sour smell, visible mould or damp patches mean the powder should be thrown away. Our guide on storing mushroom powders and extracts has more detail.

Sourcing and Testing

Our Chaga is wild-harvested from living birch in northern and Carpathian forests. Conks are never taken whole, so the growth can regenerate, and only the dense, mature material is used. It is dried at low temperature before milling to protect heat-sensitive compounds.
Every batch is tested for heavy metals, pesticides and microbial safety. That testing matters for any fungus, because fungi take up metals from their host far more readily than most plants — our article on heavy metals in mushroom supplements explains why.

Safety and Contraindications

Chaga is naturally high in oxalates. There is a published case of kidney damage from oxalate in a person who took several teaspoons of Chaga powder every day for months. Do not use it if you have a history of kidney stones or kidney disease, and keep to moderate daily amounts.
Speak with your doctor first if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, diabetes medication or immunosuppressants, as Chaga may interact with all three. Avoid it for two weeks before surgery. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are allergic to mushrooms. Our article on Chaga side effects and interactions covers these in full.
This product is a food supplement, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is the powder different from Chaga chunks? It is the same wild birch Chaga, milled finely. The larger surface area means it brews in 10–15 minutes instead of an hour or more, and it can be added straight to food and drinks. Chunks are cheaper per gram and can be re-brewed several times.

Do I need to strain it? For tea, yes — a fine sieve or a paper coffee filter works well. In smoothies, coffee or cocoa you can drink it as it is; it adds a slightly gritty texture rather than dissolving fully.

How much should I take? 1–3 g a day, starting at the lower end. People with kidney problems or a history of kidney stones should not use it because of its oxalate content.

What does it taste like? Earthy, woody and mildly bitter, with a faint vanilla note. It pairs naturally with coffee, cocoa, cinnamon and honey.

How long does a pack last? At 2 g a day, the 100 g pack lasts about seven weeks and the 250 g pack about four months.

Is it cultivated or wild? Wild. Chaga cannot be grown as a true birch conk on a farm, and we do not sell mycelium-on-grain products sold as Chaga.
