Phallus Impudicus Capsules contain organic Phallus impudicus fruiting body, dried at low temperature, milled to a fine powder and filled into capsules. Each capsule holds 0.5 g of powder and each jar holds 120 capsules.
This is the same whole mushroom as our dried Phallus Impudicus, in a form you can take with a glass of water. There is nothing to simmer, strain or measure, and no earthy taste to get past.

Whole Powder, Not an Extract

The capsules contain whole fruiting body powder, not a concentrate. One capsule is simply half a gram of dried mushroom, so it is not interchangeable with our Phallus Impudicus powder extract, where one gram derives from roughly ten grams of dried material.
Whole powder keeps everything the mushroom contains, including the fibre and the cell-wall material that an extraction leaves behind. The trade-off is that a gram of whole powder is less concentrated than a gram of extract, which is why the daily amount below is measured in several capsules rather than one.
There is one ingredient in the powder: milled Phallus impudicus fruiting body. There is no mycelium grown on grain, no filler, no flow agent and no flavouring. The capsule shell is plant-based.

What Phallus Impudicus Is

The common stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus) emerges from a soft white "egg" at or just below soil level and expands into its mature form within hours. The mature fruiting body carries a dark spore slime with a strong carrion odour that attracts flies, which is where the common name comes from.
The young egg stage, not the mature form, is what has traditionally been collected and is what goes into these capsules. Our stinkhorn life cycle guide walks through the stages.

Traditional Use and the Evidence

Phallus impudicus has a long history in northern and eastern European folk practice, particularly across the Baltic states, Ukraine and Russia, where preparations of the eggs were taken as infusions and used topically.
The research is thin. There is laboratory work on its polysaccharides and some interest in its wider compound profile, but very little human clinical research. Our articles on the compounds in Phallus impudicus and on common myths about the stinkhorn set out what has and has not been shown. These capsules are a food supplement, and we make no claim that they treat any condition.

Choosing Between the Four Formats

We sell Phallus impudicus four ways. The dried fruiting body is the most economical per gram but has to be simmered each time. The tincture is measured by the drop and carries an alcohol base. The powder extract is a 10:1 hot-water concentrate that dissolves in a warm drink.
The capsules are the whole mushroom with no preparation and no taste, in a fixed half-gram amount. They suit anyone who wants the dried material without the kitchen work, or who finds the flavour of the infusion off-putting.

How to Take Phallus Impudicus Capsules

Start with 1 capsule a day for the first week to gauge your tolerance. After that, a typical amount is 2 capsules twice a day (2 g in total), taken with water and food. Do not take more than 6 capsules a day.
At 4 capsules a day a jar lasts a month. There is no established best time of day for this species; taking it consistently matters more than the timing. Our guide on Phallus impudicus dosage and safety covers this in more detail.

Storage and Shelf Life

Keep the jar tightly closed in a cool, dry, dark place, away from the stove and direct sun. Stored this way the capsules keep their quality for 24 months. Capsules that have gone soft, sticky or discoloured have taken on moisture and should be thrown away.

Sourcing and Testing

Our Phallus impudicus is organic and collected at the young egg stage, while the material is firm and the mature odour has not developed. Every batch is checked for correct species identification before milling, because stinkhorns have look-alikes that differ in edibility. Like everything we sell, it is tested for heavy metals, pesticides and microbial safety. Our article on heavy metals in mushroom supplements explains why this matters for fungi.

Safety and Contraindications

Because this species is not well studied, less is known about its effects and interactions than for reishi, chaga or turkey tail, which is a reason for moderation.
Avoid it if you are allergic to mushrooms. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding. Speak with your doctor first if you take prescription medication, particularly anticoagulants or immunosuppressants, and stop two weeks before planned surgery. Stop if you notice any adverse reaction.
This product is a food supplement, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these capsules an extract? No. They contain whole fruiting body powder, 0.5 g per capsule. If you want a concentrate, choose the 10:1 powder extract instead.

Do they smell or taste of stinkhorn? No. The carrion odour belongs to the spore slime of the mature mushroom, which is not collected, and the capsule shell keeps the earthy taste of the powder away from your mouth.

How many should I take? Start with 1 capsule a day for a week, then 2 capsules twice a day. Do not exceed 6 capsules a day.

How long does a jar last? At 4 capsules a day, a jar of 120 lasts 30 days, and the two-jar pack lasts two months.

Are the capsules vegan? Yes. The shell is plant-based and the only other ingredient is the mushroom powder.
