Phallus Impudicus Powder Extract – 10:1 Concentrate

$39/50g

Phallus Impudicus Powder Extract is a concentrated hot-water extract of Phallus impudicus fruiting body, dried back into a fine soluble powder. It is the third format we offer for this species, alongside the whole dried Phallus Impudicus and the Phallus Impudicus tincture, and it exists for a specific reason: it is the only one of the three that is both concentrated and alcohol-free.
Where the dried material has to be simmered before each use and the tincture carries an alcohol base, the extract powder is simply stirred into a warm liquid and dissolves. The extraction has already been done — in a controlled setting, at a consistent ratio, once per batch rather than once per cup.

What 10:1 Actually Means

Ten kilograms of dried fruiting body go in; one kilogram of finished extract powder comes out. The ratio describes how much raw material was concentrated into the final weight, so one gram of this powder derives from roughly ten grams of dried mushroom.
That is worth stating plainly, because extract ratios are one of the more abused numbers in this industry. A ratio only tells you how much material was reduced — it says nothing on its own about what was pulled out of that material or what was left behind. A high ratio achieved by a poor extraction is not better than a lower ratio achieved by a good one.
What it does mean here is practical: a one-gram serving of this powder replaces roughly ten grams of dried material and the half-hour simmer that would have been needed to get anything out of it. Our article on extracts versus dried fruiting bodies goes into how the two compare and where each one makes sense.

Hot Water, Not Alcohol

This is a single hot-water extraction rather than a dual extract. That is a deliberate choice rather than a shortcut, and the reason is what water pulls out of fungal material.
The polysaccharides that dominate the research literature on medicinal fungi — beta-glucans among them — are water-soluble. Alcohol extraction targets a different fraction: triterpenes, sterols and other less polar compounds. A dual extract combines both, which is the right approach for a species like reishi where the triterpene fraction is well characterised and matters.
Phallus impudicus is not that species. Its polysaccharide fraction is what the limited existing laboratory work has focused on, and there is no established alcohol-soluble fraction that would justify the extra step. Adding an alcohol stage to say "dual extract" on a label would be marketing rather than chemistry, so we have not done it.
The practical consequence is that this product contains no alcohol at all, which makes it suitable for people who avoid it and for anyone who would rather not take a dropper of spirits with breakfast.

What Phallus Impudicus Is

The common stinkhorn (Phallus impudicus) is one of Europe's stranger fungi. It emerges from a soft white "egg" sitting at or just below soil level and expands into its mature form with remarkable speed, sometimes in a matter of hours.
The mature fruiting body produces a dark olive spore slime with a powerful carrion odour that attracts flies, which then disperse the spores. That smell gives the species both its common name and its epithet — and it is why the young egg stage, not the mature form, is what has traditionally been collected. Our stinkhorn life cycle guide walks through the stages.
The powder made from correctly collected young material has no trace of that odour. It smells and tastes earthy and distinctly mushroom-like, closer to a dark forest mushroom stock than to anything unpleasant.

Traditional Use in Europe

Phallus impudicus has a long history in northern and eastern European folk practice — particularly across the Baltic states, Russia and Ukraine — where preparations made from the eggs were used both topically and as infusions.
We would rather be straightforward about the evidence than imply more than exists. This species is far less studied than reishi, chaga or turkey tail. There is laboratory work on its polysaccharides and some interest in its broader compound profile, but human clinical research is limited. What exists is largely traditional and ethnomycological rather than trial evidence. Our article on stinkhorn and inflammation sets out what has and has not been shown, and common myths about Phallus impudicus addresses the claims that circulate without support.
We are not going to tell you this powder treats anything. What we can tell you is what it is, how it was made and which tradition it comes from.

Choosing Between the Three Formats

All three of our Phallus impudicus products are the same species prepared three ways, and the right one depends less on potency than on how you intend to use it.
The dried fruiting body is the traditional and most economical choice per gram. It can be simmered into an infusion or cooked with, but it requires 20–30 minutes of preparation each time and the strength of the result varies with how long it was left and how finely the material was broken up.
The tincture is the most convenient. It is measured by the drop, absorbed quickly, and travels well. Its limitation is the alcohol base, which rules it out for some people.
The extract powder sits between them. It is concentrated like the tincture and alcohol-free like the dried material, it dissolves in seconds, and it can be weighed precisely or stirred into coffee, tea, broth or a smoothie without changing the texture. It is also the easiest of the three to combine with other mushroom powders. The trade-off is that it costs more per gram than dried material and cannot be cooked with as whole pieces.
Our comparison of powder, capsules and tinctures covers how these formats differ in general terms.

How to Use

Take 1 gram (roughly a third of a level teaspoon) once daily, stirred into warm water, coffee, tea or a smoothie. It dissolves readily in warm liquid and needs no simmering or straining.
Start lower than that. Half a gram once daily for the first few days lets you gauge your own tolerance before settling into a routine — sensible with any preparation, and particularly so with a species that has less safety data behind it than the better-studied functional mushrooms.
A small scale is more accurate than a spoon if you want consistency, since powder density varies with how it settles in the jar. Take it with food if you find it sits uneasily on an empty stomach. There is no established best time of day for this species; consistency matters more than timing.

Storage and Shelf Life

Keep the jar tightly closed in a cool, dry, dark place. Extract powders are hygroscopic — they draw moisture from the air — and clumping is the first sign that a jar has been left open or stored somewhere humid.
Stored properly it holds its quality for two years. Clumped powder that is otherwise dry and normally coloured is still usable; break it up and keep it sealed. Discard it if it smells sour or musty, or if you see any discolouration, both of which point to moisture ingress rather than normal ageing.
Do not store it above the stove or on a sunny shelf. Heat and light degrade fungal compounds over time regardless of how the extract was made.

Sourcing and Quality

Our Phallus impudicus is collected at the appropriate young stage, while the material is firm and the characteristic mature odour has not developed. Every batch is checked for correct species identification before it goes anywhere near extraction — stinkhorns have look-alikes, and other Phallus and related genera vary in edibility, so identification is not a step to take casually.
Extraction is done in small batches from fruiting body only. There is no mycelium-on-grain filler in this powder, which is worth saying because grain-grown mycelium is common in the wider mushroom supplement market and is a materially different product from fruiting body extract.
Like everything we sell, it is tested for heavy metals, pesticides and microbial safety. Our guide to heavy metals in mushroom supplements explains why this testing matters particularly for fungi, which take up metals from their substrate far more readily than most plants — and why it matters more, not less, for a concentrated extract.

Safety and Contraindications

Because this species is not well studied, less is known about its interactions and effects than for the better-researched functional mushrooms. That uncertainty is a reason for moderation rather than confidence.
Anyone with a mushroom allergy should avoid it. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding, given the limited safety data. Speak with your doctor before use if you take prescription medication, particularly anticoagulants — several mushroom species have documented effects on blood clotting and this one has not been adequately studied in that respect.
Because this is a concentrate, the same weight goes considerably further than dried material would. Do not substitute it gram for gram in a recipe or routine built around the dried form.
Introduce a small amount first to assess your own tolerance, and stop if you experience any adverse reaction.
This product is a food supplement, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does this compare to the dried Phallus Impudicus? Same species, but concentrated roughly tenfold and already extracted. One gram of powder derives from about ten grams of dried material, and it dissolves in warm liquid rather than needing a 20–30 minute simmer. The dried form is cheaper per gram and can be cooked with; the powder is faster, more consistent and easier to dose.

Why is it not a dual extract? Because the compounds studied in this species are water-soluble, and there is no well-characterised alcohol-soluble fraction that would justify a second extraction stage. Adding one purely to print "dual extract" on the label would be marketing, not chemistry.

How much should I take? One gram once daily stirred into a warm drink, starting at around half a gram for the first few days to gauge tolerance.

Does it smell like the mature mushroom? No. The carrion odour belongs to the spore slime of the fully mature fruiting body, which is not what is collected. The powder is earthy and mushroom-like, similar to a dark mushroom stock.

Can I cook with it? You can stir it into soups, broths and sauces, but add it near the end rather than boiling it hard for long periods. It is an extract rather than an ingredient with texture, so it will not behave like dried pieces in a dish.

How long does a jar last? At 1 gram daily, a 50 g jar lasts around seven weeks and a 100 g jar around three months. Sealed and stored correctly, the powder itself keeps its quality for two years.

Can I take it alongside other mushroom supplements? There is no known reason it cannot be combined with the more commonly used functional mushrooms, and being a neutral soluble powder it blends easily with them. As with any combination, introduce one thing at a time so you can tell what is doing what. Speak to your doctor if you take medication.
