Royal fly agaric (Amanita regalis) is the northern cousin of the familiar red fly agaric, and the rarest of the three Amanita species we stock. Where Amanita muscaria is scarlet, royal fly agaric is a deep liver-brown to bronze, with pale yellowish warts and a stout stem. It favours cooler boreal and montane conifer forests, which is precisely why it is harder to source than the fly agaric.

Royal Fly Agaric Habitat and Seasonal Availability

Royal fly agaric fruits in a genuinely narrow window and only in suitable northern habitat — mature spruce and pine forest, often at altitude, on acidic soils. It does not occur reliably year to year in the way the fly agaric does, so availability is seasonal and limited by what the forest actually produces rather than by what we would like to stock.

Caps are dried at low temperature, roughly 45–50°C, over an extended period. Drying converts a portion of the ibotenic acid into muscimol through decarboxylation — a process dependent on both heat and time. Store dried royal fly agaric caps in a sealed, airtight container away from light, moisture and heat. Whole caps keep considerably better than ground material, since they expose far less surface area. Properly stored, they remain stable for up to 24 months.
