Cordyceps Militaris Powder

$55/100g

Cordyceps Militaris Powder is whole Cordyceps militaris fruiting body, dried at low temperature and milled to a fine, bright orange powder. It is the same material as our dried Cordyceps militaris, ready to stir into a drink or food and measure by the gram.
Unlike Reishi or Chaga, Cordyceps militaris is mild and slightly nutty rather than bitter, so the powder blends easily into coffee, smoothies and shakes.

Which Cordyceps This Is

There are two species sold as Cordyceps, and the difference matters. Cordyceps sinensis (now Ophiocordyceps sinensis) is the wild Himalayan fungus that grows on caterpillar larvae. It is rare and extremely expensive, and most products labelled "sinensis" at supplement prices are actually a cultivated mycelium strain.
Cordyceps militaris is a different species that can be grown to a full fruiting body on a vegetarian substrate, and it is the species behind much of the modern research. Everything we sell is Cordyceps militaris, grown without insects — which makes this powder suitable for vegetarians and vegans. Our article on Cordyceps militaris vs sinensis explains the distinction.

Fruiting Body Only

The pack contains one ingredient: milled Cordyceps militaris fruiting body. There is no mycelium grown on grain, no filler, no flow agent and no flavouring.
Mycelium-on-grain products are milled together with the grain they grew on, so much of their weight is starch, and their cordycepin content is a fraction of a true fruiting body's. The vivid orange colour of this powder comes from the carotenoids in the fruiting body and is the easiest visual check — grain-based powders are pale beige or grey.

What Cordyceps Militaris Contains

Cordyceps militaris is studied mainly for cordycepin (3′-deoxyadenosine), adenosine and its polysaccharides, all of which are largely water-soluble, along with carotenoids and sterols that give it its colour.
The human research is early. A 2024 randomised controlled trial on Cordyceps militaris looked at markers of immune function, including natural killer cell activity, and other small trials have looked at endurance, oxygen use and recovery with mixed and preliminary results. Our article on Cordyceps militaris and immunity summarises the work. This powder is a food ingredient, not a treatment for any condition, and we make no claims that it boosts energy production or hormone levels.

Powder or Capsules?

We sell Cordyceps militaris in four formats. The dried fruiting bodies are good for tea and cooking. The powder is the whole mushroom in a measurable form. The capsules contain a 10:1 dual extract, 500 mg per capsule, with no taste. The tincture is an alcohol-based liquid extract.
The powder keeps the whole mushroom and costs less per gram; the capsules are concentrated tenfold. Our article on Cordyceps powder and capsules compares the formats.

How to Use Cordyceps Militaris Powder

A typical daily amount is 1–2 g (about half a level teaspoon). Start at 1 g for the first week.
Stir it into coffee, tea, a smoothie or a shake, or add it to porridge or yoghurt. Many people take it in the morning or 30–60 minutes before exercise; avoid taking it late in the evening if you find it affects your sleep. Our guides on the best time to take Cordyceps and Cordyceps dosage cover timing and amounts.

Storage and Shelf Life

Keep the pouch tightly resealed in a cool, dry, dark cupboard and always use a dry spoon. Light fades the carotenoids that give the powder its colour, so keep it out of direct sun. Stored this way it keeps its quality for 24 months. Light clumping can be broken up; a musty or sour smell, damp patches or visible mould mean the powder should be thrown away. See our guide on storing mushroom powders and extracts.

Sourcing and Testing

Our Cordyceps militaris is grown in small batches to full fruiting body on a vegetarian substrate with no insects, harvested at maturity and dried at low temperature before milling. Every batch is tested for heavy metals, pesticides and microbial safety — see our article on heavy metals in mushroom supplements for why this matters for fungi.

Safety and Contraindications

Cordyceps militaris is generally well tolerated in studies, with mild digestive upset, dry mouth and restlessness the most commonly reported side effects.
Speak with your doctor first if you take anticoagulants or antiplatelet drugs, diabetes medication or immunosuppressants, or if you have an autoimmune condition. Stop two weeks before surgery. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are allergic to mushrooms. Our article on Cordyceps side effects and interactions covers this in full.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Cordyceps sinensis? No. It is Cordyceps militaris, a different species grown to fruiting body without insects. Genuine wild sinensis is rarely available at supplement prices.

Is it vegan? Yes. The fruiting bodies are grown on a vegetarian substrate, with no insect larvae involved.

What does it taste like? Mild, slightly nutty and savoury. It is not bitter and disappears easily into coffee or a smoothie.

How much should I take? 1–2 g a day, starting at about 1 g for the first week.

How long does a pack last? At 2 g a day, the 100 g pack lasts about seven weeks and the 250 g pack about four months.

Should I choose the powder or the capsules? The powder is the whole mushroom at a lower price per gram. The capsules hold a 10:1 extract, so the daily amount is much smaller and there is nothing to measure.
