Trametes Versicolor Powder (Turkey Tail)
- 100g
- 250g
Turkey tail is a thin, leathery bracket fungus that is far too tough to eat as it is. Milling it to a powder is what makes it practical to use at home.
Fruiting Body Only
The pack contains one ingredient: milled Trametes versicolor fruiting body. There is no mycelium grown on grain, no filler, no flow agent and no flavouring.Mycelium-on-grain products are milled together with the rice or oats they were grown on, so a large share of their weight is starch. Whole fruiting body powder does not have that problem, and it is the part of the fungus that the traditional preparations and most of the research are based on.
What Trametes Versicolor Contains
Trametes Versicolor is best known for two protein-bound polysaccharides, PSK (polysaccharide-K, or krestin) and PSP (polysaccharopeptide), together with beta-glucans and phenolic compounds. These are largely water-soluble, which is why the mushroom has always been taken as a hot-water decoction. Most of the clinical research used purified PSK or PSP, often around 3 g a day, not whole mushroom powder, so those results cannot be transferred directly to this product. Our articles on PSK and PSP and on Trametes Versicolor and the gut microbiome explain what the research does and does not show. This powder is a food supplement, and we make no claim that it treats any condition.
How to Use Trametes Versicolor Powder
Because turkey tail is woody, the powder does not dissolve and is not pleasant stirred raw into cold food. It works best with heat and water.Quick tea: simmer 2–3 g (about one level teaspoon) in 300–400 ml of water for 10–15 minutes, then let it settle or strain it through a fine filter. The fine grind extracts far faster than whole pieces, which need 45 minutes or more.
In a hot drink: stir up to 1 g into coffee, cocoa or a broth and drink it with the sediment. The taste is mild, earthy and slightly sweet, with none of the bitterness of reishi.
A typical daily amount is 2–3 g. Start at 1 g a day for the first week. Our Trametes Versicolor dosage guide and tea versus extract comparison go into amounts and preparation.
Powder, Capsules, Dried or Tincture?
We sell Trametes Versicolor in four formats. The dried fruiting bodies are the most economical and suit a long, slow decoction. The powder is the same mushroom prepared in minutes. The capsules hold the whole powder with no taste and no preparation. The tincture is a dual extract measured by the drop.Storage and Shelf Life
Keep the pouch tightly resealed in a cool, dry, dark cupboard and always use a dry spoon. Stored this way it keeps its quality for 24 months. Light clumping can be broken up; a musty or sour smell, damp patches or visible mould mean the powder should be thrown away. See our guide on storing mushroom powders and extracts.Sourcing and Testing
Our Trametes Versicolor is collected as mature fruiting bodies and checked for identity before milling. Genuine turkey tail has a pored underside; the look-alike false turkey tail (Stereum ostrea) is smooth underneath and lacks the compounds turkey tail is valued for. Our guide on real vs false turkey tail shows the difference. Every batch is tested for heavy metals, pesticides and microbial safety.Safety and Contraindications
Trametes Versicolor is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported effects are mild digestive upset, bloating and darker stools. It affects the immune system, so speak with your doctor first if you have an autoimmune condition or take immunosuppressant medication. Take care with anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs, and stop two weeks before planned surgery. If you are being treated for a serious illness, speak with your treating clinician before adding any supplement. Do not use if pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you are allergic to mushrooms. Our article on Trametes Versicolor side effects and interactions covers this in full.
