Lion's Mane Powder (Hericium erinaceus)
Lion's Mane Powder (Hericium erinaceus) — 100g

Lion's Mane Powder (Hericium erinaceus)

$45/100g

Lion's Mane Powder is whole Hericium erinaceus fruiting body, dried at low temperature and milled to a fine, pale powder. It is the same mushroom as our dried Lion's mane, ready to stir into a drink or a dish without soaking, chopping or cooking first.
Lion's mane is one of the mildest functional mushrooms to eat — slightly sweet, faintly savoury and never bitter — which makes the powder the easiest format to fit into an everyday routine.

Fruiting Body Only

The pack contains one ingredient: milled Lion's mane fruiting body. There is no mycelium grown on grain, no filler, no flow agent and nothing added for flavour.
This is the most important thing to check in any Lion's mane product. A large share of the market is mycelium grown on oats or rice and milled together with the grain it grew on, which leaves a powder that is mostly starch by weight. The hericenones studied in Lion's mane form in the fruiting body, so a grain-based mycelium powder is not a cheaper version of the same thing but a different product. Our article on fruiting body versus mycelium explains the difference, and how to read a Lion's mane label shows how to spot it on packaging.
Genuine fruiting-body powder is cream to light beige and smells pleasantly of mushroom. A grey, very fine, flour-like powder with little aroma is a sign of grain substrate.

What Lion's Mane Contains

Lion's mane is studied mainly for two groups of compounds. Its polysaccharides, including beta-glucans, are water-soluble and are the subject of most of the immune and gut-related laboratory work. Its hericenones are less polar, aromatic compounds found in the fruiting body that have attracted interest for their effect on nerve growth factor in cell studies.
The human evidence is still small: a handful of short trials, mostly in small groups, on memory, mood and cognitive function. Our overview of Lion's mane and NGF in human research sets out what those trials did and did not show. This powder is a food ingredient, not a treatment for any condition.

Powder or Capsules?

We sell Lion's mane in four formats. The dried fruiting bodies are best for cooking and broths. The powder is the whole mushroom in a form you can measure and stir into anything. The capsules contain a 10:1 dual extract, 500 mg per capsule, with no taste. The tincture is an alcohol-based liquid extract.
The powder keeps everything in the mushroom, including its fibre, and costs less per gram. The capsules are concentrated tenfold and contain both the water-soluble and the alcohol-soluble fractions. Our comparison of Lion's mane powder and capsules covers which suits which routine.

How to Use Lion's Mane Powder

A typical daily amount is 1–3 g (about half to one level teaspoon). Start at 1 g for the first week and increase only if you want to.
In drinks: stir it into coffee, a latte, cocoa or a smoothie. It does not dissolve completely, so give it a good stir or blend it.
In food: add it to porridge, yoghurt, soups, sauces or broth. Gentle heat is fine; for soups, add it in the last few minutes of cooking.
Many people take it in the morning, but there is no established best time of day — consistency matters more than timing. Our Lion's mane dosage guide compares amounts across formats.

Storage and Shelf Life

Keep the pouch tightly resealed in a cool, dry, dark cupboard and always use a dry spoon. Fine mushroom powders absorb moisture from the air, and humidity, heat and light all shorten their life.
Stored this way it keeps its quality for 24 months. Light clumping can be broken up; a musty or sour smell, damp patches or visible mould mean the powder should be thrown away. See our guide on storing mushroom powders and extracts.

Sourcing and Testing

Our Lion's mane is grown to full fruiting body on hardwood-based substrate, harvested at maturity and dried at low temperature before milling. Only the fruiting body is used.
Every batch is tested for heavy metals, pesticides and microbial safety. Fungi take up metals from what they grow on far more readily than most plants, which is why this testing is standard for everything we sell — our article on heavy metals in mushroom supplements explains why.

Safety and Contraindications

Lion's mane is a culinary mushroom and is generally well tolerated. The most commonly reported side effects are mild digestive upset and, rarely, skin itching or rash; stop using it if either appears.
Do not use it if you are allergic to mushrooms. Speak with your doctor first if you take anticoagulants or diabetes medication, as laboratory and animal data suggest possible interactions. Avoid it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, where safety has not been studied. Our article on Lion's mane side effects and interactions covers this in full.
This product is a food supplement, not a medicine, and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this fruiting body or mycelium? 100% fruiting body. There is no mycelium on grain and no grain filler in the pack.

What does it taste like? Mild, slightly sweet and savoury, with no bitterness. Most people barely notice it in coffee or a smoothie.

How much should I take? 1–3 g a day, starting at about 1 g for the first week.

Can I cook with it? Yes. Add it to soups, sauces, broths and porridge. Gentle heat is fine; add it towards the end of cooking rather than boiling it for a long time.

How long does a pack last? At 2 g a day, the 100 g pack lasts about seven weeks and the 250 g pack about four months.

Should I choose the powder or the capsules? Choose the powder if you want the whole mushroom at a lower price per gram and do not mind a little texture. Choose the capsules if you want a 10:1 extract that also contains the alcohol-soluble fraction, with no taste or preparation.
